RAMA IX house owner protected against flood water flowing into the property through the drains by installing a Knife gate valve at the main drain in front of the house.
The knife gate valve can be closed during flooding to prevent floodwater flowing backwards in the drains and up behind the flood barriers. This additional safety feature prolongs the flood resilience during severe flooding.
Installing Flood barriers in front of houses and sealing cracks is not always enough when securing a property against flood risk, the whole property and flood risks must be evaluated.
In many cases flood water will be pushed back up drains and sewage pipes, flooding the house internally with sewage water, one simple way to protect against this is to install a knife gate valve between external drainage and internal sewage pipes to prevent water from flowing backwards. The Knife Gate valve is a simple solution and due to its design, there is no obstruction to flow during normal operation with no flooding. There are also more advanced solutions with automatic backflow valves and gravity backflow valves that close automatically when water is flowing backwards.
